Looking to add a bit more color around the house

Looking to add a bit more color around the house this fall? Well it might not be as easy as picking up a paint brush.
Don Easton, owner of Easton Painting Inc. in Woodland, said improvers underestimate the work it takes to paint a house.
“Painting is usually the last thing on the list when it comes to home improvement,” he said. “home owners sometimes hire someone who might not [have the] skills or have the proper material to paint.”
Underestimating time, work and cost of painting is where many home improvers make mistakes. To ensure that their painting process goes smoothly, Easton has a few suggestions for new painters.
“The first thing you should know is what you want to do,” he said. “Look at magazines and see what you like.”
Currently, some color trends are blue and greenish tones, he said, while primary colors and tans aren't as popular as before. But when choosing a color, make sure that it goes with the furniture in the room.
“Its cheaper to paint a wall than change a couch,” he said.
He also tells home owners to make sure to study before they start, trust the paint store they go to, realize that the project will cost more than expected and to know who they're working with.
“Just because they did a good job for your friend's house, doesn't mean they'll do a good job for you,” he said.
Even with the perfect idea, Easton said that home owners need to take into account the time needed for their project.
“Make sure you have the proper amount of time to do what you want to do,” he said.
The time of year can also affect projects, since painting becomes harder during the fall months. With shorter days and the change in air moisture, it takes longer for paint to work to finish.
Hiring a professional to paint in the fall can also be difficult, Easton said that they have several projects in October and are already taking painting requests for next year. He suggests that those looking for painters call ahead two months ahead of time.
Easton Painting Inc. is located at 530 Second Street, and specializes in historic and custom painting. For more information, call 661.6517.

Have you noticed how Woodland's Victorian neighborhoods have brightened up in recent years? Inspired by the colorist movement sparked by San Francisco's "Painted Ladies", several Woodland owners of these vintage homes have added multiple exterior paint colors to accentuate architectural detail. Woodland-based house painter, Don Easton, has painted several of these charming "Painted Ladies" in recent years, working closely with homeowners on selection of colors. He will lead a tour of several of these Victorians discussing exterior house colors and what's involved in prepping and painting century-old houses.
